ScribbleMonster's Monthy Message 2003

January 2003
Happy New Year, ScribbleFriends!

I've been thinking about asking my neighbor, Mrs. Scribbly, to teach me how to knit.   I want to make sweaters for the squirrels that I see outside in my yard. They always look so cold this time of year hanging out in the trees without their leaves.  My dad says that the squirrels are fine because they grow extra fur in the winter and build nice, warm nests for houses, but they still look cold to me.  ScribbleBunny thinks that we would have a hard time catching the squirrels and getting sweaters on them.  He might be right.  Maybe there's a reason why you never see squirrels in sweaters. I think I'm going to ask Mrs. Scribbly to teach me how to knit anyway.

February 2003
Happy February, ScribbleFriends!

I love boxes.  There are just so many neat things that you can make with a box.  You can make a robot, or a stage for your puppets. You can make a TV set like my friends and I did in ScribbleMonster and the Broken TV.  You can make a house for your toys. If the box is big enough, you can make a house for yourself! Yesterday my dad brought home a box big enough for me to sit in and I made it into a car.  I drew all the lights and controls on the box with markers and made a steering wheel out of a paper plate. My car is really cool.

Tonight my friends and I are going to the drive-in theater - in my living room!  I'm going to use my new car, ScribbleKitty is bringing over her Big-Wheel®, ScribbleBunny's trying to find the blow-up boat from his pool and ScribblePiggy is planning on sitting in her sled.  We're all going to line them up in front of the television set and pretend we're at the drive-in. My dad is going to rent a movie and make popcorn for us.  It's going to be a blast! You should try it too!

March 2003
Happy March, ScribbleFriends!

Boy, was my dad mad at me last week! He said he was "disappointed" in my behavior, but he sure acted like he was mad. He said just because I am a monster is not a license to act like one.  It all started because I refused to respond when a grown-up greeted me. My dad told me I was being rude and disrespectful, and that I should always answer when someone greets me. He explained that not answering a person makes them feel unimportant.

I felt really bad about it, so this whole month we're going to work on my social skills. It's really fun. I'm learning how to be polite and all about the magic words - "please" and "thank you". We've been practicing in all different kinds of situations so I'll feel comfortable no matter what comes up!

Thank you for reading my newsletter. Please come back soon!

Your polite pal,

ScribbleMonster

April 2003
Happy April, ScribbleFriends!

I want to start a new holiday this month.  Here's my idea: I'd like to have National Rhyming Song Day.  You would celebrate by rhyming everything you say, except you can't SAY anything, you have to sing all day long! Wouldn't that be fun?  I mean "It would be such fun to sing a song and keep singing, singing all day long"!

My grandma thinks it would only be fun for a little while, but she thinks scooters are only fun for a little while, too!

Enjoy the Spring!

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

May 2003
Happy May, ScribbleFriends!

It rained a lot yesterday. Did you ever notice that when it rains you see a lot of worms? I've always wondered why that is.  Does the rain knock them out of the ground? Are they coming up to take a bath? Maybe they're going swimming in the puddles?

I asked Professor Scribble and he said that when it's wet, it makes it easy for the worms to get around. You see, it's actually faster for them to move on land than under ground.  But when the sun is out, the worms might dry up!  Worms can actually live for a couple of months under water, but if they're out in the sun and their skin dries up, they won't be able to breathe!

I'm glad I'm not a worm. I like the sun.  Do you?

June 2003
Happy June, ScribbleFriends

Boy, this has been a busy month for me!  First school ended and then I moved.  Well, I have the same address, but ScribbleTown has an all-new home.  If you haven't stopped by, be sure to visit us at www.scribblemonster.com to see all of the changes.

If that weren't enough, I just started taking dance lessons at the Crazy Legs School of Dance with my friend, ScribblePiggy. I wasn't sure that I wanted to go at first, but dance class is really a lot of fun!  We've already learned the ScribbleStomp and next week we are working on the Barnyard Boogie. I'm glad ScribblePiggy and I get to be partners in class.  She always makes me laugh. Are you doing any special activities this summer?

July 2003
Happy July, ScribbleFriends!

I love the mail. There's something so special about getting a card or a letter addressed to you and delivered right to your mailbox. My dad says that there is both good mail and not-so-good mail, but I think anything that comes with my name on it is good mail.  I've been sending pictures and letters to my family and friends and they have all been sending me stuff back! Mrs. Scribbly sent me a postcard from her vacation that had a picture of a dinosaur on it. It looked like he was at a gas station for some reason. ScribbleBunny made me a funny mask with construction paper and sent it to me in a big envelope.  Best of all, my grandma sent me a package with a baseball cap inside!

Did you know that you can send a letter anywhere in the United States for just 37 cents!?  And that it is possible to send a letter to just about anywhere in the whole world!? Did you ever get a letter or a package delivered to you in the mail? Who sent it to you?  Do you have someone that you would like to send a letter to?

I've got to run. The maillady's here!

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

August 2003
Happy August, ScribbleFriends!

I have 3 mosquito bites. I don't like mosquitoes - at least not the girl mosquitoes, because they are the only ones that bite.  I do like most other bugs. Ants are always fun to watch.  They are always so busy working.  It doesn't look like it, but they're really fast. They've got really tiny legs, but if their legs were as big as ours, they would be as fast as a race horse!  And they're able to lift 10 or more times their weight!  Ants are like the super-powered bugs.

Caterpillars are pretty neat.  I like the furry ones best. Did you know that caterpillars change into moths or butterflies? It's like they're changing into their secret identity!  But I would have to say that lightning bugs are my favorite.  They make that glow on the inside of their body and it shines through a clear part of their exoskeleton.  It's like they've got glow-sticks built in their chest!  Actually, that's how they made glow sticks - by copying the lightning bugs' secret formula for making their glow!

Hey, bugs would make a good superhero team.  I think I have an idea for a new comic book!  I better get the crayons out!

ScribbleMonster

September 2003
Happy September, ScribbleFriends!

Our news this month is that my sister and I have opened our own restaurant!  We call it The Scribble Cafe. First we made menus by folding a piece of paper in half and writing down all of our menu choices.  We offer peanut butter & jelly or cheese and turkey sandwiches served with apples, bananas or grapes.  Our customers can order a salad with their meals and we have cookies and pudding for dessert. We also have all kinds of drinks to choose from: apple juice, grape juice, white milk, chocolate milk. . .

Our dad and our grandma were our first customers.  I was the greeter, ScribbleSis took their orders and we both made the food in the kitchen. Grandma said the service was great and Dad left us a tip!  I think it helped that we called them "sir" and "madam" a lot. We had so much fun that I think we'll do it again tomorrow!

Would you like to play restaurant? What would your restaurant be like?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

October 2003
Happy October, ScribbleFriends!

It's October again, and you know what that means... Halloween! It's my absolute favorite time of the year, being a monster and all. Do know what you're going to be for Halloween this year?

My friends and I have been playing this new game we call Ghost Story. We all sit in a circle with a flashlight and the lights out. One of us holds the flashlight under our chin (so we look really spooky) and starts to make up a story - "Once upon a time, there was a traveling circus starring a pink gorilla..." Then the flashlight gets passed to the next person in the circle and that person continues the story - "...the circus was traveling through a very small town in the mountains when their truck broke down." We keep passing the flashlight around and making up the story as we go along. We've come up with some pretty creepy - and some pretty silly - stories. You should try it with your family and friends!

Have fun trick or treating! Boo! (That's just me messing with you.) Boo! (Just me again.)

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

November 2003
Happy November, ScribbleFriends!

I love books.  And I love parties. That's probably why I really love book parties.  ScribbleKitty, ScribbleBunny and ScribblePiggy are coming over to my house for a book party tonight.  I'm so excited!

We'll have hot chocolate and cookies, and of course, books.  It is called a book party after all.  Everyone brings over one of their favorite storybooks and we take turns reading them to each other.  After we've each read our book, we vote on which one we liked the best. Then we draw pictures of our favorite parts in the story.  Sometimes we'll act out the story from our favorite book, too. Whenever my friends and I have a book party, we always have a blast!

Have you ever been to a book party?  What book would you bring?  Maybe you would like to draw a picture about your favorite book.

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

December 2003
Happy December, ScribbleFriends!

I'm busy making gifts for everyone on my list - just like Santa Claus. I've set up a workshop in my room where I'm drawing pictures, making books and other projects for my family and friends. It is so much fun!

My dad loves dogs and bikes, so I made him a picture of a dog riding a bike. Grandma's getting a necklace that I made for her with string and some things I found around my room.  I wrote a special story called "The Mystery of the Missing Flowers" for Mrs. Scribbly who loves gardening and a good mystery. ScribbleBunny is always telling jokes, so I'm going to make him a joke book.  I would like to write a song for ScribbleKitty, then maybe make a silly tape for my silly friend ScribblePiggy. Oh, and I'm making a puppet out of one of my socks for my sister.  I can't wait to give everyone their gifts!

Maybe you can make your own workshop.  Who's on your holiday list? What things would you like to make for them?

Enjoy the holidays!  Your pal,

ScribbleMonster
