ScribbleMonster's Monthy Message 2007

January 2007
Happy January, ScribbleFriends!

I have a swell new game for you today: Playing Card Bingo!  You'll need two decks of playing cards for up to four players (in our case, me, ScribbleKitty, ScribbleBunny and ScribblePiggy). Each of the players gets dealt 13 cards from the same deck.  The players then sort their cards face up in front of them by suit (clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades). The second deck is used by the caller (for us, Mrs. Scribbly).  The caller shuffles thatr deck and announces each card as it's drawn from the top.  If the caller names one of your cards, you flip it over. The first player to have all 13 cards flipped and yell, "Bingo!" wins the game.

Players can use the same cards when they start a new game, but the caller's deck will need to be shuffled again. If you want to have more than four players, you just need more cards (you can add up to four more players with each additional deck). Oh, and keep the Jokers out (the cards, not players - ScribblePiggy!)

Do you like playing card games?  What's your favorite game to play?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

February 2007
Happy Febrary, ScribbleFriends!

People who know about these things say that more than a billion Valentines will be shared around the world this year.  The only time more cards are sent is Christmas. I love Barbie and Scooby-Doo as much as the next guy, but I decided to make my own Valentine cards this year. It's a fun project and I think my friends are really going to like them.

My dad gave me some red construction paper and helped me cut it into smaller squares.  I have stickers, markers and crayons to help me decorate the cards and now I'm writing something nice to all my friends. I think of something I really like about them and write it down. I just finished my card for ScribbleBunny. I wrote:

    ScribbleBunny,
I like the way you share your sock puppets.  Happy Valentine's Day!
    Your pal, ScribbleMonster

Would you like to make your own Valentines this year?  Will you be my Valentine?

Your pal,

March 2007
Happy March, ScribbleFriends!

My pals and I have been playing a great new game and we want to share it with you. We call it, "What IS That?" Here's how you play:

First of all, you need a dark room with a big clear wall to make shadows on. The player who is "IT" stands in the back of the room with a flashlight. Everyone else sits with their back that player, facing the blank wall. "IT" then makes a shadow with something - a pencil, an action figure, a cup, their head, a toy train or anything else they can find in the room. Then, the "IT" player says, "What IS that?" (The more disgusted or shocked you sound saying "What IS that?" the better.) The first person to correctly guess what the shadow is wins and it's their turn to be "IT."

You can really fool people by holding things upside-down or making the shadows look really big by holding the object close to the flashlight.

Don't you love playing with flashlights? Have you ever made shadow puppets?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

April 2007
Happy April, ScribbleFriends!

ScribbleMonster invites you to share an afternoon of guitar-based pop with the whole family this Saturday, April 28th at a special all-ages Chicago International Pop Overthrow show at The Abbey.  International Pop Overthrow (IPO) is the largest showcase of power-pop music in the United States.  Each year IPO brings in power-pop bands from all over the world to highlight what is new in the world of power-pop music.  This year's Chicago festival features 130 bands over 16 days (April 13 to April 28) and ScribbleMonster is the one children's band in the lot of 'em.  We've got a fun set full of some of our most high-energy ScribbleTunes planned and can't wait for Saturday to get here. It should pop in a powerful way.

The Abbey is a great place to see live music. They also have great food and with the great music it should all make for a fun afternoon. Oh, and it's gonna rock! Hope to see you there!

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

May 2007
Happy May, ScribbleFriends!

I've been helping Mrs. Scribbly in her garden this week and I've learned a lot about plants. Did you know that there are more than 300,000 different kinds of plants that have been identified and named in the world? And scientists think there are easily more than a million additional plants out there yet to be found and named! Wow! That could take a while.

Mrs. Scribbly had us start by taking some weeds out of her garden. I had a hard time telling what was a plant and what was a weed. Some of them looked really pretty and had flowers, but Mrs. Scribbly would say, "That weed has got to go!" So I asked her what the difference was between a plant and a weed. She told me all weeds are plants, but they become a weed when they grow somewhere you don't want them to be. So if a rose starts growing in the middle of your cornfield (or if corn starts growing in your rose garden) it officially becomes a weed.

Next, we dug holes and planted some flowers in her yard. I asked her what the difference was between a plant and a flower. All flowers are plants, but not all plants have flowers. Most plants, about 85%, are flowering plants. It's pretty great to have someone like Mrs. Scribbly who knows so much about plants living right next door. I'm a lucky monster.

Do you have a garden at your house? What's your favorite plant?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

June 2007
Happy June, ScribbleFriends!

I love going to the library; it's the best deal in the world!  It's like walking into a book store and being able to buy any books, CDs and videos you want. Only, you have to return them when you're done.  But that's okay, because you can alway borrow something again sometime if it's one of your favorites.

Most libraries have a summer reading program where they give you prizes and a party for reading books. I know, it's crazy!  Last summer I got a tee-shirt, a water bottle, bookmarks, pens and a frisbee! ScribbleBunny even won a bicycle!  And all we had to do was read books!  It's as nutty as getting candy for playing dress-up at Halloween! Not that I'm complaining.  I sure hope nobody catches on.

The library also has free shows from magicians, musicians, storytellers and other neat stuff all summer long.  See, I told you it's the best deal in the world.  You should see what your library's up to this summer.

Do you have a library card?  Does your library have a summer reading program?

ScribbleMonster

July 2007
Happy July, ScribbleFriends!

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! The very first edition of the ScribbleGazette is here! My friends and I started our very own newspaper. We thought it would be fun to be reporters, write stories and draw pictures with our free time this summer.

Our top story was about the block party we're having next week. ScribblePiggy listed all the games and activities that are planned and wrote about all the fun we had last year. I made a comics page with silly pictures and jokes. ScribbleKitty interviewed Mrs. Scribbly next door and asked her both funny and interesting questions. ScribbleBunny got excited when we said we needed someone to write about the Sox. He wrote a story about all kinds of different things you can make with socks. It wasn't really what we were looking for, but it was a lot of fun anyway.

We made copies of our paper and delivered them to everyone on the block. Hey, you can make your own newspaper, too! Just click here to print out the pages we used to make our paper.

What will your top story be? Who would you like interview?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

August 2007
Happy August, ScribbleFriends!

I have another nifty new game for you! We like to call it Action Figure Hide and Go Seek.  ScribblePiggy and I wanted to play hide and go seek. The problem was, ScribbleBunny and ScribbleKitty weren't home and we quickly realized that playing hide and go seek with only two people isn't that much fun. That's when we got the idea to use some of our action figures and made up the game Action Figure Hide and Go Seek.

We picked out five brightly colored action figure toys and took turns hiding them in a room. One person left them room while the other person hid all five of the toys. It's a lot easier to find places to hide when you're only five inches tall.  You're also a lot harder to find when you're only five inches tall. To make the game easier, you can play with the rule that part of the action figure has to be showing in plain sight.  Once all five action figures are found, you switch places.  Now the seeker hides the toys and the hider seeks. Easy enough, right?  And a lot of fun!

Do you like playing hide and seek? What's your favorite game to play with a friend?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

September 2007
Happy September, ScribbleFriends!

I've noticed that my dad always wants to play The Quiet Game.  That's the game where everyone has to stay still and be quiet for as long as they can. If you make noise or move around, you're out.  It's kind of fun, but honestly, I can't understand why it would be my dad's favorite game.  There are so many better games to play.

One of my favorites is The Laughing Game, which is almost the opposite of The Quiet Game.  It's actually a fun game to play at the dinner table.  Then again, my dad says The Quiet Game is a good game to play at the dinner table, too. We all like different things I guess, and that's okay.

In The Laughing Game everyone tries not to laugh while at the same time attempting to make others laugh. You can say silly things, make funny faces or do whatever you think will make people laugh.  My sister always laughs at herself and is the first one out.  The best part of the game is when it gets down to the last two players.  It's awfully hard not to laugh when everyone else in the room is laughing.

Would you rather play The Quiet Game or The Laughing Game? What's your favorite game to play?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

October 2007
Happy October, ScribbleFriends!

October is my most favorite month of the year. Every year when I flip my calendar to October I can't help but cheer, "Hooray! Halloween!"  I do a little Halloween dance, start singing, and then I remember that I have to wait until the very last day of the month until it's here. Oh well. Actually, I think the build-up to the big day and all the waiting is part of the fun.  Um, not really, but it seems like a nice thing to say.

My little sister has her costume already.  She's going to be Cinderella this year, but I can't decide what I want to be. I really want to come up with something great because we're going to a party with a costume contest this year.  Do you have any ideas?  What are you dressing up as this Halloween?

Boo! (That's just me joking around.)

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster

November 2007
Happy November, ScribbleFriends!

I am so excited because tonight is Award Night!  My friends and I had a secret ballot to write down our favorite things about each other. My dad put all of our votes together and will be hosting our award event.  Everyone is getting dressed up in fancy clothes and coming over for a spaghetti dinner.  We even put the long rug in our hallway out in front of the house so that our guests will arrive on the re… well, blue and green floral… carpet.

My dad doesn't know it, but we took one vote without him.  He'll be receiving the Honorary Nicest Dad in the Neighborhood, Board Game Playing, Master Macaroni & Cheese Chef, Who's a Great Storyteller and Knows the Funniest Jokes Award tonight. I can't wait!

Would you like to have your own award night? What are your favorite things about your friends and family?

Your pal,

ScribbleMonster
